MORE FEATURES

The many fans of Travis Edmonson who specifically admire him as a composer as well as entertainer, should not be surprise to learn that, since his early teens, the charismatic balladeer was also  writing poetry for the page.

Certainly, his superb  lyrics represent all the elements of the poet's art - metaphor, cadence, sensitive understanding of human feelings, and the gift to express them so that the thought is transferred directly to the listener's mind and heart.

Then , there is imagery.  What a host of Travis Edmonson songs call to mind their own indelible pictures … The lovers surrounded by newspapers as a warm rain falls outside… Or the solemn ones, dejectedly sitting in an empty café  where the only conversation is the ticking of a clock … A lonesome boy staring into the sunset of yet another day as he searches for his lost love …the drifter telling his story to others of a similar fate around a train-yard campfire.  Or the penniless young man hopelessly watching the object of his affection parade around the square with those who have bestowed the presents she wears.

As with the most meaningful verse, behind these graphic scenes lie layers of complex implication, tracing the hidden  incidents in these people's lives, allowing (and even obliging) the audience to probe their own consciousness to find understanding in the situations and circumstances the players confront.

Four of the above examples give consideration to the subject of romance, but the fifth exhibits the poet's keen eye to discover pathos and depth in people, places and things which for the average person, merely melt into the landscape.

The first Travis Edmonson poem selected to represent his work on this website comes from this genre - the surroundings and aspects of everyday life.  But it dramatically and convincingly goes beyond the appreciation of such things to contemplate, first on their absence, and then the absence of everything.  The world after man has destroyed himself and his planet.
