RECESSIONAL MUSIC Travis Edmonson Recording
“How Can i Keep from Singing?”
Traditional Quaker Song
My life flows on in endless song
Above earth's lamentation.
I hear the real, though far off hymn
That hails a new creation
Above the tumult and the strife,
I hear the music ringing;
It sounds and echoes in my soul
How can I keep from singing?
What through the tempest loudly roars,
I hear the truth, it liveth.
What through the darkness round me close
Songs in the night it giveth.
No storm can shake my inmost calm
While to that rock I'm clinging.
Since Love is lord of heaven and earth
How can I keep from singing?
When tyrants tremble, sick with fear,
And hear their death-knell ringing,
When friends rejoice both far and near,
How can I keep from singing?
In prison cell and dungeon vile
Our prayers for them are winging.
When faith by shame is undefiled,
How can I keep from
The memorial liturgy for the dead is an Easter liturgy. It finds all its meaning in the resurrection. Because Jesus was raised from the dead, we, too, shall be raised.
The liturgy, therefore, is characterized by joy, in the certainty that “neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
This joy, however, does not make human grief unchristian. The very love we have for each other in Christ brings deep sorrow when we are parted by death. Jesus himself wept at the grave of his friend. So, while we rejoice that one we love has entered into the nearer presence of our Lord, we sorrow in sympathy with those who mourn.
