The distinguished translator of Latin American drama, Professor Charles Philip Thomas, who has been acting as Treasurer of The Travis Edmonson CD Collection for the past two years, flew out from Wisconsin to visit Travis in the hospital in January 2009. Here is his first-hand report.
I visited Travis on Wednesday, January 28th and he was in very good spirit.
Despite all he's been through and the frequent sedation against the pain, he was very aware of everything, and responded to each thing I said as best he could.
I told Travis I was there to wish him the best, and that I had 28 pages of greetings from his fans and supporters who'd written into his website. He received my words with great warmth, and in response, shook my hand (as he did several times during the short visit).
Then I read out some of the greetings to him (and his wife promised to read the rest later). He recognized most names, and showed that in several ways even though he couldn't speak due to a tracheotomy. (I understand that he's meantime listened to the messages many times, and is deeply touch by all the support out there for him.)
Against all that has been thrown at him, Travis is struggling to get better, and fighting a brave fight.
The nurses, who are giving Travis terrific care, and with whom he jokes with his eye contact and word mouthing, were completely unaware at what a celebrity they had been looking after. When I told them, Travis had a sly sheepish grin as one exclaimed, "Travis, you never told us any of that. We want to hear all about it!"
He was being so modest, and the nurses were very excited to learn about Travis' fame.
I told him that all the good thoughts and prayers from his fans will continue, and we all wished him the best in his health battles. He expressed a grateful "thank you" which I am passing on to everyone who holds Travis' best interests in their hearts.

February 2009
During the past year, Prof. Thomas has been working with Travis Edmonson on an educational project to use Travis' Latin repertoire as a teaching aid in the study of Spanish at secondary and university level as well as a tool in enhancing intercultural understanding in primary schools as well.
Another exciting project Prof. Thomas has on the horizon is converting a Spanish-language straight play into an English-language musical using Travis' songs.
